Utsjoki

Utsjoki is the northernmost municipality in Finland. Utsjoki is also the only municipality in Finland, which has Sámis as majority. In Utsjoki municipality there is three villages (centrums): Utsjoki and Karigasniemi and Nuorgam. From all the three villages (centrums) you can find all the necessary services (school, shops etcetera) and something extra too. There are 1400 inhabitants in Utsjoki municipality.

In Utsjoki village in summer time you can visit in ”Luontotupa”, where you can find information about local nature and sources of livelihood from a exhibition. Through Utsjoki village flows River Utsjoki from south to north. On the northern side of the village flows famous Salmon River Teno. From village to both up stream and down stream is popular area for fishing salmon from rowing boats. In winter time people fish arctic charr from lakes up on the fjeld area.

There is bridge cross River Teno in Utsjoki village and it is possible to cross border of Norway there too. Trading with Norwegian is important source of livelihood. In Utsjoki you can find shops, accommodation and custom and border guard detachment.

Historically important place to visit is Utsjoki church and the church yard cabins in Mantojärvi. Church is made of stone and it is standing by Lake Mantojärvi. The church yard cabins are old cabins, which were used at old times, when people came to services and for trading items. In summer time there is café and guidance.

Near Utsjoki village stands sacred Ailigas fjeld, which still has big meaning for local Sámi people. We shall respect them. In Utsjoki there are marked hiking routes on the western side of Utsjoki. For longer hinking trips there is Kevo Canyon, which is nature reserve and you can walk only on marked route. Route will take you through the canyon. Northern starting point is near Kenestupa, where you can also see Kenespahta steep.

On the south-west from Utsjoki there is Paistunturi wilderness area and on the south-east from Utsjoki there is Kaldoaivi wilderness area.
