The village of Inari is the centre of the Sámi culture in Finland and the heritage of the Sámi culture is active and vital in Inari and it´s surroundings. Here you can learn more about Sámi culture, handicrafts and reindeer husbandry. SIIDA – Sámi Museum, Northern Lapland Nature Centre have created a fascinating information package focusing on the indigenous Sámi people and the yearly cycle of Northern nature. The most essential elements of the nature are Lake Inari, numerous rivers, fells and the magical change from season to season, from the Northern Lights of the polar night to midnight sun in summer. Inari is a natural and genuine choice for a traveller, who seeks untamed nature and native culture. In Inari you can make a trip to the Ukonsaari island, an ancient sacrificial site of the Sámi or go hiking to the wilderness church of Pielpajärvi 7 km north from the village.
Solojärvi is one of the oldest villages of the Inari Sámi. Good waterway connections and hunting grounds beyond compare also attract settlers from farther afield. The region’s age-old hunting culture is evident from the numerous deer pit traps of the region. The village has a good range of activity programmes related to Sámi culture and reindeer husbandry, and handicrafts, not to mention Juutuajoki, one of Finland’s best trout rivers.
SIIDAIn the village of Inari, by the River Juutuanjoki Bridge is Siida - Sámi Museum and Northern Lapland Nature Centre. These provide tourists with an experience-rich information package of Sámi culture, displayed with the various seasons of the North. The Museum has two main exhibitions and a number of visiting exhibitions, and an already traditional outside museum area. The main exhibitions use pictures and words, and carefully selected objects to tell of Sámi history in the region and further afield, as well as people’s relationship with nature, which is the basis for culture in the region. It is worth stopping off at Siida, as Siida is the most popular cultural site of the Municipality of Inari. The grounds have a spacious sod-hut. Siida also has the Sarrit Restaurant (a Sámi word that means blueberry), which acts as a café-restaurant. Sarrit has a daily lunch menu, as well as an à la Carte menu, and tasty baked goods à la Maison. SIIDA – SÁMI MUSEUM AND NORTHERN LAPLAND NATURE CENTRE Inarintie, 99870 Inari
