The Nellim village lies by the Lake Inari on the southeastern bank of the famous wilderness lake, near the Russian border. Originally, Nellim was inhabited by Inari Sámi, but in the 1920-30s Finns came to work in logging camps and later after the war in 1940s Skolt Sámi moved to the village from Petsamo. Today the village is known as a meeting point of three cultures. In this village you can visit the Nellim village museum and the Orthodox church of St.Triphon of Petsamo.
MUSEUM ROOMIn connection with the Nellim Wilderness Hotel there is a Skolt Sámi tradition room, a small museum with items of the original inhabitants of the village, the Inari Sámi. Whitefish and salmon nets made from cotton yarn and leg-hold traps tell of traditional livelihoods. Skilfully embroidered mittens are examples of the high standard of handicraft skills. Traditional Skolt and Inari Sámi costumes are also on display. The Museum Room also sells Skolt Sámi handicrafts. |
